But that’s not the case for Dougherty’s Pharmacy in South Melbourne.
Its founder Dougherty, who works in his garage, has made an ideal batch of his favourite cough syrup by hand in his kitchen.
“You can make a batch as a single batch, which is what I’ve done, and then you can buy a batch on a Sunday and you can use it as a recipe for a batch,” he said.
“It’s the most perfect way to make syrup.
You can have two different batches of syrup, which you can store in different ways, which I’ve found makes the best syrup.”
Dougherty started making his own syrup from a recipe book he bought on eBay in 2016, when he was working in a job he liked.
“I read about the book and the recipe, I went to the local pharmacy and they were selling them,” he told the ABC.
“The idea was, how do you make syrup in your kitchen?”
Dougherty was able to purchase a recipe from the book on eBay for $3,000.
Since then, Dougherty has used it to produce batches of homemade cough syrup that are now available on the internet.
As he has used his own homemade syrup for many years, Dougherys experience in making syrup has led him to understand the need for a good recipe.
“There’s been a lot of books and people who have tried to do it, but it’s just really hard,” he explained.
“We’ve been using this recipe for so long that we’ve just become a big fan of it.”
Dougherys best-selling book, The Book of Simple Ways, is the perfect source of inspiration for his syrup.
“That book is a great guide to making this syrup, because it’s the book you can get if you need to make it,” he advised.
Doughertys experience in creating his own batch of homemade syrup has been so beneficial that he has been able to expand his recipe book to include recipes for all sorts of different things.
He said it’s been his life’s dream to be able to make his own batches of cough drops, so he now has a huge variety of recipes for both home and commercial syrup.
The biggest advantage of making his syrup is that you can make it at home.
“My kitchen has always been a place where I like to make stuff, but if I can get it into my home and then I can just make it on my stove and it’s a lot easier to prepare,” he added.
“If I can make my syrup on the stove, it’s easy, I can cook and then just pour it into the jars and I can put it in the fridge and I don’t have to worry about making syrup on a Saturday morning.”
Dougie is the founder of his own home-based business, The Pharmacy.
After years of making syrup, Dougie decided to open a pharmacy.
“One of the things I wanted to do with this business was to make the syrup and the product I sell is very different to the stuff that I sell to people, but I’ve always loved making my own stuff,” he revealed.
“When I started making it, I made it at my kitchen because I could make the same stuff in the kitchen.”
People who make syrup tend to be very creative, but when you make it yourself you don’t know how to make everything.
“But once you make the stuff you make, you’ve got to make that stuff in your own way, and that’s why you can do it at your kitchen, you can keep it fresh and you’re going to use it.”
